With all the appliances, tools, cords and wires that we use on a daily basis, it is important to know how to use them properly and safely to prevent any sort of injury to the family. You want to ensure that you provide a safe and secure environment for your family. Here is a few tips on how to go about it.
Keep appliances, especially hair dryers away from bathtubs, puddles, sinks, pools and especially wet hands.
Unplug an appliance before cleaning it, even when it is off, it can shock you and note that wet skin decreases your resistance to electricity significantly.
Never put metal objects in live parts of appliances or in outlets. If it overheats, unplug it and have it checked. Do not try to fix it yourself, you could be placing yourself in grave danger.
Cord insulations will not withstand heat, repeated yanking, bending. This will cause the wires to become exposed. Live wires are the last thing you need lying around your house, especially if you have children running about.
Knives and other sharp objects
Left carelessly, these may seriously injure someone. Store knives away from the reach of children, while they are in use, keep them in a way such that they cannot easily be knocked over.
Toys and other playthings could be serious sources of injury if left lying around carelessly. Make sure your kids clean up after themselves, as someone could trip on these toys and break a bone or two.
Preventing electrical fires.
Keep anything that can burn or catch fire easily away from any source of heat.
Ensure you turn off all heating and cooking appliances before leaving home.
If you must use an extension cord temporarily, match the amperage or wattage limits marked on the appliance to avoid a fire hazard.
When not at home, ensure that all the windows and doors are locked, to hinder any burglars from making a shopping spree at your house.
Do not keep the spare key to your house at an obvious place that is easy to track. Place it somewhere that only you and the members of your family are aware of, and make it the last place one would think to look.
Your home is the one place you come to relax and unwind after a long day, make it as safe as possible for yourself and for the sake of your loved ones.
